Following opening ceremonies, fans were treated to an entertaining baseball game featuring strong pitching, solid defense, and aggressive baserunning.
City drew the first pool play game in the 2019 District 3 tournament, facing off against Terra Linda at West Marin's home field in Fairfax.
Amar earned the first QAB of the season with a HBP, and a subsequent Sumner walk gave us runners at first & third. Sumner took second, but Terra Linda was able to get the ball back to home plate in time to get Amar at the plate, setting something of a theme for the day of aggressive baserunning. Fortunately after a Santino single, were able to convert the second "runners on first & third" situation as Sumner scampered home with the game's first run.
Sumner was on the hill for City. After a swinging bunt by the leadoff batter, Sumner struck out the following two batters. With a runner at second, a hard grounder down the line was snared by Amar, but the throw to first was wide, allowing Terra Linda's first run to score. Another overthrow on the same play went into an empty left field, allowing Terra Linda to take the lead, 2-1.
After 1-2-3 second innings for both teams, City got back on the board with two runs in the top of the 3rd with a leadoff single by Aidan K, a walk to Caiden, and a single by Sumner, who got hung up between second an third for an out. In the bottom of the 3rd, nice putouts by Caiden at second and Jaheim at short kept the score at 3-2 in City's favor.
In the top of the fourth, City got started with back to back singles by Beckett and Caiden. Unfortunately both Beckett and Caiden got caught stealing third, leaving Travis who had worked a walk as the only runner on base. Santino came through with a lasered single to score Travis and run the score to 4-2.
Sumner kept on cruising on the mound, working efficiently to pitch all seven innings with a mix of strikeouts (9 total on the day) and defensive putouts by Michael in right field, Miles M at third base, and Aidan M at first base.
It was great to see our team play an official game together for the first time! We knew there would be some first-game jitters, which we experienced right away in the first inning on offense and defense. They didn't necessarily stop there, with us being caught stealing 5 times on the day...but three of those were real close, so we'll hope those go our way next time.
Our next game is Monday evening June 24 in Larkspur...it will be City vs Twin Cities :)
