Youth Umpiring Program
Do You Love Baseball?
Could You Use Extra Cash?
Want To Make Community Service Fun?
San Francisco Little League has positions
available in its youth umpiring program. Here's the deal:
Program:
San Francisco Little League is a youth baseball program
for residents of San Francisco age 6-18. Youth umpires are eligible
to umpire games in the 8-14 year old divisions. Games are played at
fields in the City on weeknights at 5:30 and on weekends. SFLL has a
strict policy prohibiting verbal abuse of umpires.
Requirements:
Candidates for the youth umpire program
must be willing to meet the following requirements: Youths age 13-18
are eligible to be paid for umpiring after attending our mandatory training
sessions. Returning or otherwise demonstrably experienced umpires between
the ages of 18 and 21 who are still students are also eligible for our
paid program. (We may require proof of school enrollment and attendance.)
All new youth umpires must have experience playing baseball for at least
two seasons. Youth umpires can only umpire games involving players younger
than themselves.
You Must be at least 13 as of April
1, 2008 to be eligible to be an umpire.
Benefits:
Youth umpires are paid $20 per game. In addition, a $100
bonus will be paid in June to youth umpires who earn a minimum of 12
bonus points*. Youth umpires also have an opportunity to earn an additional
SUPER BONUS of $25 for every two games worked during
our playoff season. These are limited only by your willingness to work
extra games, and your eligibility to do so. The same requirement of
timely attendance is required to be eligible for any bonus.
BONUS POINTS: Each
game worked as scheduled and on time is worth 1 bonus
point. Cancellations** cost ½ point; a “no show”
costs 1 point. Arriving to a field late within the 1st inning of any
game without prior notice and a reasonable explanation costs ½
point. If you arrive after the 1st inning no bonus point will be earned
but you will be paid for your work.
**Each umpire will be allowed two
cancellations for cause – a school event, illness or a rescheduled
LL game as a player - without penalty. Thereafter all cancellations
cost ½ bonus point deduction. A trade of one game for another
approved by the assignor is NOT a cancellation
Umpiring can also be a great way
to satisfy school community service requirements however, for most schools,
the position must be unpaid to qualify.
We will happily write high school
letters of recommendation for our youth umpires in good standing.
Next Steps:
Apply
for the Program by February 15th. The earlier you
apply, the better your chances of being accepted.
