Interested in Umpiring?
We are looking for both adult and youth umpires (must be 13 by April 30, 2008). No prior umpire experience is required, but we do require at least two years of baseball experience of our youth umpires. We offer free training and a great opportunity to be part of a wonderful community organization. If you have interest, please complete a registration form by clicking on one of the links below. We have also provided more information in the sections that follow. If you have interest, but want to know more before you fill out the registration form, please contact Greg Gilchrist.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Several important procedural issues:
1. What if I can't ump a game I have been assigned?

It is a real problem when umps cancel out on game assignments. So please avoid cancellations if at all possible. If you can find your own replacement, that would be great, but we require that you notify the Umpire Assignor before, or immediately after the game, so that payments will be made accurately. Otherwise, email us as soon as possible and we will let the coaches know that they will not have an ump for a particular game.

2. If something in the schedule changes, will I get a phone call?

No, as a general rule we do not make telephone calls to schedule games or warn of changes. Therefore, it is important that you check your emails frequently and always the night before a game you are scheduled to ump. We will also do our best to keep the umpire assignment schedule on the website current. It is a good idea to check your personal calendar against that master umpire schedule every week or so. You may also feel free to email the Assignor with any questions that may arise.

3. What if rain is an issue?

Some fields we don't control. Fort Scott field status is available at 561-2115. Rec and Park field status is available at 831-5510. Coaches can agree to cancel a game ahead of time. If they do, they will call you to let you know. If the coaches agree to show up for a game, then it is the umpires' decision whether or not to play. If the field is unsafe, then cancel the game. This may be hard to do with players and parents all present and wanting to play, but safety is the first concern. However, if you feel it is safe, by all means play.

4. How do we get paid?

Youth umpires will be paid in three lump sums. The first payment, for games worked in March and April, will be mailed out in early May. The second payment, for games worked in May is mailed in early June. The final payment is for playoff games worked in June plus any bonuses earned. This check in either mailed in early of July or handed out at our wrap-up meeting and celebration. We make every effort to make these payments in a timely manner, but must verify that all games through the pay period have been worked as scheduled before doing so.

5. When will games be available for assignment?

We publish game schedules and email them to umpires as soon as we have the field assignments confirmed by the volunteer scheduler. This is usually done in three parts – the beginning of each half of the season and then before the playoffs. We ask you to be prompt with your game requests as we make assignments on a modified* first-come basis.. At the beginning of the second half of the season we will defer making assignments for one week as we collect requests so that we can work with all youth umpires who wish to make the required minimums to qualify for bonuses and try to help you in this effort. However, after this short period we will return to assigning games on a first-come basis and can no longer guarantee that enough of the games that you are requesting and eligible to work will be available to guarantee your minimums are met. Also, remember, you only get paid bonuses if you have a good record of showing up and being on time.

* In general assignments are made on a first-come/first-assigned basis, however we reserve the right to juggle assignments based on the qualifications of a particular umpire and the requirements of a particular game. The Assignor has full discretion in making assignments regardless of when a request in received.

6. Can umps decide to swap plate and bases assignments?

Yes, if both umps are willing.

7. What time do weekday games at Paul Goode Field start since they are sometimes listed at 5:30pm and sometimes at 6:00pm?

Games at Paul Goode start as close to 5:30pm as possible. Experience tells us that the University HS teams practicing there often don't clear the field until 6pm and we need to respect their right to the field as long as they need to use it.

8. What if I didn't receive as many games as I would like this time?

Make sure you get your request in by the deadline for the second half and relax your constraints. Umpires with the most flexibility receive more games. We will make every effort to give you as many games as you are willing and eligible to work, but our first priority is covering the games with qualified officials.

9. What if I didn't get assigned any games?

Next cycle, make a request within the timeline suggested. We will make every effort to give you as many games as you are willing and eligible to work, but our first priority is covering the games with qualified officials.

Let us know any other questions you might have. You don't need to report game scores as the home coach has that responsibility. You do need to report any injuries (serious), ejections or behavior issues that you feel need the League's attention. Please submit any reports in that category by email.
