SFA Bows Out Of Sectional

07/19/2010, 12:59pm (PDT)
By Mark Hazelwood

After winning seven straight games to win the District 3 championship last week, the SF American 12's just couldn't get the engine re-started this past weekend at the Section 1 Tournamcnt in Lafayette.  SFA faced a big Vacaville team in the opener on a hot Saturday afternoon.  Adam Singer started for SFA and matched the Vacaville starter pitch for pitch for 4 innings.  With the score 0-0 in the top of the fifth -  Vacaville put across a single run and then got a three run homer to make the score 4-0.   SFA tried to rally in the late innings on a double by Clayton Read and a single by Eli Rudman,  but couldn't push a run across.  Final 4-0.

In the elimination game on Sunday,  SFA faced Petaluma.  Anthony Aguirre started for SFA,  but came out of the game in the first inning with back spasms.  Petaluma's batters were as hot as the weather -- putting an 11 spot on the board.  SFA could not recover. Read was again a bright spot for SFA,  pitching 2 -  2/3rds innings of shutout ball and hitting a solo homer.  Final victory for Petaluma-  11-1.

Elimination from the sectional does not diminish the great post-season for SFA.  The players, coaches and families are proud of the new championship banner that will be hung at Tepper Field for years to come.

SF American Captures District 3 Championship

07/16/2010, 8:26am (PDT)
By Mark Hazelwood

A night after beating a very tough Mill Valley team in the semi-final game,  SF American closed the deal on Wednesday night,  defeating Novato South 5-2 for the District 3 championship before a capacity crowd at Boyle Field in Mill Valley.  With the victory,  SFA became only the second San Francisco 12’s team to win the District 3 title.  SF’s only other 12’s title came in 2006.You can look up the source at http://www.unpage.org/california/ca-d3.htm.

Many of SFA’s wins on the march to the title were not easy and this game was no different.  Novato South jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. SFA trailed 1-0 until the top of the third inning, when RBI doubles by Adam Singer and Jacob Shaw gave SFA a 2-1 lead. Anthony Gonzales then crushed an outside fastball over the right-center field fence for a two run homer and SFA suddenly led 4-1.

Clayton Read was again a major factor in SFA’s win.  Coach John Balladares called upon Read to pitch in the third inning.  Calmly,  Read ended a Novato South rally.  In the fourth,  NS got a single run to make the score 4-2,  but stranded two runners. In the fifth inning,  Read did his thing with the bat,  lacing an RBI double down the third base line to make the score 5-2.  That is all the runs he would need.  Read set down NS 1-2-3 in the fifth inning.  In the sixth,  NS got a one-out single to make things interesting.  Read, however, induced the next batter to hit a ground ball to SS Brandon Balladares,  who calmly stepped on second and threw to first for a game-ending and championship clinching double-play. At that point,  the celebration was on.

SFA now advances to the Section 1 tourney in Lafayette. SFA’s first game will be Saturday at 2 pm.  SFA  “All The Way!”

SF American To Play For District 3 Championship

07/13/2010, 10:00pm (PDT)
By Mark Hazelwood

They finally did it.  Ending three years of frustration, the SF American 12’s finally beat Mill Valley 3-0 on Tuesday night at Boyle Field in Mill Valley to advance to the District 3 Championship game. Behind a spectacular pitching performance from ace Anthony Aguirre, SFA played stellar defense, limiting a strong Mill Valley offense to only four hits.

SFA got on the board first in the top of the first inning, with a first pitch line drive to right field from our lead-off hitter, Brandon Balladares. This was followed by three walks to take a 1-0 lead. The San Francisco team sent a loud message of confidence early in the game that would carry them through the next 5 innings.  Aguirre and Mill Valley’s pitcher (Collins) kept batters from both teams off balance until the top of the fourth, when Mill Valley rallied with consecutive two-out singles. The next batter laced a ball up the middle.  Second baseman Marco Salvetti snared it and forced the runner at second to end the threat.

In the bottom of the fourth,  Salvetti came to the plate with two outs.  MV’s Collins  had retired 11 straight SFA batters at that point.  Salvetti turned on a fastball and launched a home run that hit the scoreboard in left field to give SFA a 2-0 lead.  SFA added a single run in the fifth to extend its lead to 3-0 and that was more than Aguirre would need.  Aguirre kept the MV batters off balance all night, allowing only one MV runner to get to third base.

SFA will face Novato South on Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Boyle Field for the District 3 Championship.  Come out and root the boys on!

SF American Bats Come Alive Against Ross Valley

07/12/2010, 10:01pm (PDT)
By Mark Hazelwood

SF American pounded out 13 runs on 10 hits in just three innings at the plate and defeated Ross Valley convincingly 13-2 in the District 3 quarterfinals on Monday night at Tepper Field.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning,  SFA struck back with three runs,  keyed by a two run triple by Clayton Read. This was the beginning of a great game for Read at the plate and on the mound.  In the bottom of the second,  Read was called upon to pitch and get SFA out of a  bases loaded- nobody out jam.  Read retired the next three batters, allowing only one run to score.

In the bottom of the second,  Anthony Gonzales unloaded on the first pitch he saw and hit a three run homer to make the score 6-2.  In the bottom of the third, SFA sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to put the game out of reach.  The big blow was a grand slam by Read, who drove in six runs on the evening.

The win sends SFA to the District semi-finals on Tuesday night against  Mill Valley at Boyle Park in Mill Valley

SF American Advances with 10-3 Win Over SF National

07/12/2010, 8:59am (PDT)
By Mark Hazelwood

On a special day for all the SF All-Stars – some of whom have played with or against each other since Farm level,  the SF American 12’s broke open a close contest and defeated SFN 10-3 at Tepper Field on Saturday.  The win boosted SFA’s District 3 playoff record to 5-1, tying them for first place after completion of round-robin play.

SFN starter Zach Avila and SFA starter Anthony Aguirre both pitched well early.  The game was a 2-2 “pitchers duel” until the fourth inning.   In the top of the fourth,  SFA  broke the game open when Aaron Halford and Jacob Shaw  each connected on two-run homers to make the score 6-2.  Nikko Kinnard,  Eli Rudman and Adam Singer (4 for 4 for the second time in the playoffs) then added key hits and SFA extended its lead to 10-2- putting the game out of reach.   SFA’s bullpen was again strong, with Kobi Allen, Brandon Balladares and Halford keeping SFN in check.

SFA now moves onto the quarterfinals on Monday,  when it faces Ross Valley at 5:30 pm at Tepper.
