SF Gets Knocked Out of Sectionals

SF Junior Bats Cool in Petaluma Heat

SF Juniors had a wealth of pitching this tournament season.  Jordan Wilson, Jake Vollen and Jared Hem were the ninth, tenth, and eleventh pitchers used in SF Juniors tournament play this summer.  Jake Vollen did the lion's share of the pitching, tossing four efficient innings while striking out four.  Like those who proceeded them, Sunday's pitchers did their job, pitched to contact, got timely strike outs and kept the game close in hopes that the offense would break the game open.  The offense just wasn't there for the second time in Sectional play.  SF had scored 78 runs in six games, averaging 13 runs a game in district play, while in sections we managed to score six runs total in two games.   The opposing pitching wasn't dominant, but couldn't get that key hit with runners in scoring position to really catch fire.

Albany had the lead for the majority of the game which they fortified with an automatic out defense.  The lone lead SF held was when Gerald Reader singled and was driven in by Jack Murphy's crushed triple to right center.  Murphy scored on an over throw on the same play to give SF the lead 5-4 after five innings.  Albany went ahead for good in the top of the sixth with a couple of bloop singles and runners advancing on passed balls at the plate.  The final score was 7-5 Albany.

This was a great group of players to coach and I was fortunate to be carried along with their dominant pitching, hitting and fielding.  Although we didn't perform to our own lofty standards, we have a lot to be proud of and a banner denoting our accomplishments this season at Tepper.  Congratulations on making it as far as we did and best of luck in the future.

SFA Bows Out Of Sectional

07/19/2010, 12:59pm (PDT)
By Mark Hazelwood

After winning seven straight games to win the District 3 championship last week, the SF American 12's just couldn't get the engine re-started this past weekend at the Section 1 Tournamcnt in Lafayette.  SFA faced a big Vacaville team in the opener on a hot Saturday afternoon.  Adam Singer started for SFA and matched the Vacaville starter pitch for pitch for 4 innings.  With the score 0-0 in the top of the fifth -  Vacaville put across a single run and then got a three run homer to make the score 4-0.   SFA tried to rally in the late innings on a double by Clayton Read and a single by Eli Rudman,  but couldn't push a run across.  Final 4-0.

In the elimination game on Sunday,  SFA faced Petaluma.  Anthony Aguirre started for SFA,  but came out of the game in the first inning with back spasms.  Petaluma's batters were as hot as the weather -- putting an 11 spot on the board.  SFA could not recover. Read was again a bright spot for SFA,  pitching 2 -  2/3rds innings of shutout ball and hitting a solo homer.  Final victory for Petaluma-  11-1.

Elimination from the sectional does not diminish the great post-season for SFA.  The players, coaches and families are proud of the new championship banner that will be hung at Tepper Field for years to come.
