After averaging almost 5 1/2 runs in the first inning of the first 5 games, SFA came up empty in the top of the 1st last night against SR. Mike Altman struggled early on the mound, walking the first five batters, but he was helped by a baserunning error, then helped himself with 2 strikouts to limit the damage to 2 runs. Mike bore down for the next 2 innings, shutting down SR's offense with the help of a breathtaking relay from Jack Singer to gun down a runner going from 1st to 3rd on a shot hit to center. Owen Mahoney helped Mike in the 3rd with a difficult catch on a foul behind the plate that earned him praise from the opposing coach, his first of two. Will Jacobsen took the mound for the final 3 innings and shut out SR with the help of a pair of well fielded balls by Singer. With SFA up 3-2 in the top of the 6th and a runner at 3rd, SR intentionally walked Singer. James Crutcher made them pay with a 2 RBI triple to center. SFA finished pool play in 2nd place of 12 teams, posting an impressive record of 5-1 and limiting opponents to just 23 runs in 6 games. SFA will face SFN tomorrow at 11 am in the first game of the knock out round.
