SFLL 2008 Fall Ball Season

2008 Fall Ball Registration is CLOSED. We have filled all teams and have a waitlist.

Fall Ball is a great way for kids to keep their baseball skills sharp, and also enables kids to continue to learn and to have fun playing the game, and, of course, to make new friends.  Also, for new players to baseball it is a great time to introduce them to the game.

Fall ball games take place on Sundays in September and October starting Sunday September 7. The season is developmental at all levels. No scores or standings are kept and no umpires are assigned to games. Parent volunteers serve as umpires, calling balls and strikes from behind the pitcher. Teams may have a practice or two before the first game but once games begin there are no practices.

The season ends with a double-elimination tournament for all divisions except Farm the first two Sundays in November. The tournament is competitive, umpires call the games, and a champion emerges for each division. Farm baseball ends its season with a round-robin series of games.

Deadlines: On June 21, we closed Fall Ball registration to determine the number of teams for each divisions based on registrations as of that date. On July 6, we reopened registration on a space available first come first serve basis to fill any remaining openings. We will close registration again on July 16 to process the late additions.

Fees: Fees for the 2008 Fall ball season are still only $80 but payment must be received by July 16 to be considered for any openings.

To complete your registration, you must Register Online (CLOSED)and submit applicable fees and a birth certificate (if you are new to SFLL) to 2521 Judah, San Francisco, CA 94122. Fees are refundable less a $25 processing fee up until July 31. After July 31, fees are not refundable. Any player who registers after the June 21 deadline and we can not place on a team will receive a full refund.

You can check your registration status.

Divisions:

This year returning players will play Fall Ball in the same division as they played in the Spring 2008 (with certain exceptions). The reason is that we believe that the appropriate time to determine if players should move up is in spring after we have spring and Fall season and a new skills evaluation session. The only exceptions are as follows:

  • Players born before May 1, 1996 will move up to Juniors. We know that these players will play Juniors in the spring of 2009 because it is required by their age and we believe that Fall play on a bigger field will provide a good introduction.
  • Players who will be at least 8 as of April 30, 2009 and who played Farm in the Spring may request to play Rookie (introduction to kid pitch). Again, we believe that this will give these kids a good opportunity to try playing kid pitch in the Fall season. If there are sufficient numbers, we will create two divisions of Rookie, one for new Rookie players and one for returning Rookie players.
  • Upper and Lower Farm will merge into one division for the Fall.
  • In order to make full team sizes and even number of teams in divisions, we may move a handful of players to different divisions.
  • Players who coaches feel were incorrectly placed in the Spring may be considered for movement.

Divisions: The Fall ball divisions will be:

  • Farm coach pitch
  • Rookie beginning kid pitch (possibly split into 2)
  • Minors
  • Majors for players who played Majors spring 2008 and will be remaining in Majors in 2009
  • Juniors big field baseball for players little league age 13-15

League age is based on the player's age on April 30, 2009.

Farm Groups: Players who choose to play in Farm can request to be in groups of up to 4. If there are 4 players, they must provide a coach.. Please follow the instructions carefully in the online registration form. These requests must be submitted no later than June 21.

Interested coaches can express their coaching interest by completing the Fall Ball coaching application. Fall Ball is less demanding and a great way for new coaches to test the waters. We need more good coaches in SFLL and we hope that all those interested will apply. We hope to confirm coaches by the end of June so please get those applications in now.

Softball: There will not be a Fall softball season because we have learned that we do not have the demand to make an adequate number of teams.. Softball players are welcome to sign up for baseball in the Fall.

Last year over 85% of those participating rated Fall Ball a good or great experience. We hope that you will be part of SFLL's Fall season. Last year about 75% of the spring players also played Fall ball.
